Consultation has concluded

The first phase, Summit Talks, set the foundation for Our Summit by hosting conversations with the community via one-on-one interviews, collecting responses to the online and mailer questionnaire, and hosting a series of kick off events throughout the County. This phase was all about hearing from the people that make up Summit County. We heard what you love about Summit County, what needs improvement, and what the community wants to see in the future.

Now that we heard from you, it is time to build upon the input from phase one and get to the root of community values that would compose the Vision. This second phase, Summit County Envisions, will gain constructive feedback from the community on potential elements of the Community Vision. This phase will create and confirm Our Summit Community Vision.

We will continue to ask for your input here on this website. Check in often to see new polls, maps, surveys, and more! You’ll also find some fun ways to get involved in person.

What can I do today to participate in Our Summit Community Visioning Plan?

1. Answer the Summit County Moves Forward Questionnaire below!

2. Attend events that are featured in the “key dates” column on the right-hand side of this page!

Our Summit: Charting the Path

10 months

Instructions:

According to the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute 2020-2060 projections, by 2050, Summit County is expected to grow by about 13,000 people with the need for an additional 14,000 jobs. With the increased population, Summit County needs to seriously consider how to plan for this growth.

The purpose of this activity is to find a place for all of those jobs and houses in Summit County. Think about what types of communities you want to see in Summit County in the future, what elements are most important to protect, enhance, and uphold, and what types of tradeoffs may accompany those decisions. There is not a singular path forward but perhaps a few. Consider the upsides and downsides of all the scenarios.

Your Task:

You need to figure out where 13,000 people will live in Summit County. Additionally, you will need to think about how to create 14,000 more jobs. WHERE should housing be developed and HOW would you create employment? You can choose a combination of centers. The only rule is they MUST add up to 13,000 people and 14,000 jobs. Click here to view the tradeoffs for each type of community center.

Community Center Types:

The centers range from Town to Suburban and provide a range of benefits and trade-offs. Each community center can support different amounts of housing and jobs. To learn more about the different centers review the following information:

1. Town Center

  • Employment: 8,000-13,0000
  • Population: 10,000-15,000

  • Comprised of mixed-use development
  • Designated Open Space outside Town Center
  • Mostly townhomes and multifamily buildings
  • Some compact residential homes on small lots
  • Building height ranges from 1-6 stories

2. Village Center

  • Employment: 5,000-8,000
  • Population: 7,000-10,000
  • Medium-Density
  • Center for Business and Living
  • Comprised of large lot commercial and institutional areas
  • Townhomes and multifamily buildings
  • Some large lot compact housing
  • Designated open space within village center
  • Building height ranges from 1-4 stories

3. Neighborhood Center

  • Employment: 1,000-5,000
  • Population: 2,000-7,000
  • Low to Medium-Density
  • Small and large lot single family housing
  • Medium and small townhome developments
  • Designated open space within center
  • Medium-Density Institutional and Commercial areas
  • Building height ranges from 1-3 stories

4. Suburban Center

  • Employment: 500-1,000
  • Population: 500-2,000
  • Low-Density
  • Primarily residential areas with schools, churches, and public uses
  • Comprised of large lot housing and single-family homes
  • Some Commercial areas
  • Building height ranges from 1-2 stories

Steps:

1. Place a center pin on the map:

  • What types of community centers do you want to see in Summit County in the future and where?

2. Determine what element (water, transportation, open space, recreation, and economy) options you want to see either in conjunction with your new community centers or in other places throughout the County.

  • Questions to consider:
  1. Why did you choose these specific centers, and why did you place them in the location you did?
  2. How do the options you chose for the community elements affect Summit County?
